SUMMARY:Remembering Bridget
DESCRIPTION:“You can tell a lot about a community by the way they treat their dead.” On the morning of June 10th\, 1692\, one woman met the hangman’s noose. It was the point of no return in the Salem Witchcraft Hysteria. Her name was Bridget Bishop. \nPreviously accused in 1680\, she was the only victim not executed in a group. Remembering her as a fellow human being is crucial to understanding the madness that ensued. Join us in person at the Salem Witch Trials Memorial on Charter Street on June 10th at 10 am for a commemoration of the 334th anniversary of the death of the first victim of the 1692 Salem Witchcraft Hysteria. The short remembrance will honor this wronged woman – who was also a domestic abuse survivor – and acknowledge all victims and survivors of abuse\, prejudice\, and ignorance – past and present. This will include 17th-century poems\, floral tributes\, and information about Bridget’s life. \nFlowers donated by Voices Against Injustice will be available for the public to place tributes on the memorial stones of their choice. The remembrance will be live-streamed and available for replay via Instagram @creativecollectivema and @thepetticoatpages1693 \nBridget Bishop – A Remembrance of Injustice on June 10th \n \nShare this:\n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:What Really Happened at Turners Falls? The Story of a Massacre
DESCRIPTION:The monument to Captain William Turner proclaims a great colonial victory\, 350 years ago on May 19\, 1676: this panel discussion tells you the truth\, based on a 13-year\, National Park Service-funded investigation. David Brule\, president of the Nolumbeka Project\, archaeologist David Naumec\, and Liz Cold Wind Santana-Kiser\, tribal historic preservation officer of the Chaubunagungamaug Band of Nipmuck Indians\, all played pivotal roles in this groundbreaking investigation. In this panel\, they’ll explain what the evidence tells us\, and why and how we need to remember the past differently. \nPart of the Metacom’s Resistance: Retelling King Philip’s War collection. \nShare this:\n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:Book Club: Whose Story? Two Views of King Philip’s War
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, mainstream understanding of King Philip’s War was based on accounts such as Mary Rowlandson’s story of her captivity and ransom. But then William Apess\, Pequot minister\, author and activist\, came along. His Eulogy on King Philip\, published in the early 19th century\, turns Rowlandson’s captivity narrative on its head. In our virtual book club\, we’ll read and discuss writings from each of them – conflicting views powerfully argued. SUMMARY:Erasure: History\, Memory and King Philip's War
DESCRIPTION:Why don’t we know about King Philip’s War? The answer\, says the Congregational Library’s Tricia Peone\, is found in the archives. Historians from John Eliot and Increase Mather wrote their accounts of what happened – and this point of view prevailed into the 20th century\, effectively erasing Indigenous people in the process. Delve into the primary sources to see how our understanding of history has been shaped\, and explore the Congregational Library’s remarkable new online source on King Philip’s War.

SUMMARY:Surviving Slavery: The Sale of Indigenous People
DESCRIPTION:Women\, children\, combatants\, noncombatants\, Christian and non-Christian – anyone who was Indigenous during King Philip’s War could be captured and sold into slavery to places as distant as Tangier or the Caribbean. Historian Lin Fisher reveals this little known history with an in-person and live-streamed talk at the Colonial Society\, Beacon Hill\, Boston. Based in part on his forthcoming book\, Stealing America\, which you can purchase at a 50% discount through PHB. A topic that’s both heartbreaking and essential.

SUMMARY:The Unknown War: King Philip's War\, 1675-1678
DESCRIPTION:In 1675\, war broke out in Rhode Island when Native people fired on a handful of colonists\, killing a young English man. Or so goes the story. \nIf you’re one of the relatively few people in the US who have heard of King Phillip’s War\, this is probably all you know. Or perhaps your Massachusetts town has a monument to what it calls heroic colonial captains. But what really took place in those bloody years\, 1675-1678\, across New England? \nThis vital presentation by historian Kevin March is the first in our spring lecture series Metacom’s Resistance: Retelling King Philip’s War. It offers the essential foundation you need for the rest of the series. Don’t miss it! \nKing Philip’s War (1675-1678) has rightly been described as a watershed moment for the Native and Puritan inhabitants of New England. The history of this forgotten conflict is most often told through Mary Rowlandson’s famous captivity narrative and the victors’ monuments scattered in towns throughout New England. However\, these settler sources distort our historical memory of the complex tensions that led to war\, the political and environmental factors that shaped its course\, and its diverse outcomes for Native communities across the Northeast. \nIn this talk\, Kevin March re-examines King Philip’s War\, offering a more nuanced picture of the conflict that reshaped New England. \nThe Partnership of Historic Bostons is an all-volunteer organization. As always\, their public history events are free. But to make events such as this one\, as well as the Metacom’s Resistance series\, PHB could use your help! Please donate now to support real history.  \nhttps://historicbostons.org/donate \nShare this:\n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:PEM Reads: Salem’s Centuries
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Salem 400+\, join PEM for a series of four virtual readings of Salem’s Centuries: New Perspectives on the History of an Old American City\, written and edited by Donna Seger and Brad Austin of Salem State University. Each session will focus on one century of Salem’s history. \nSalem is best known today for its infamous witch trials\, but there is much more to the city’s history. An important trading center since its European colonization in 1626\, Salem was also the scene of dynamic social and material changes in the 20th century. Salem’s Centuries highlights the depth and diversity of Salem’s history\, including stories of Indigenous peoples\, early settlers\, Black community members and immigrants. Chapters covering events such as the American Revolution\, the Industrial Revolution and World War II examine how Salem’s history has been lost or distorted in its public presentations over time. \nThe remaining reading sessions will take place on April 29\, June 17 and October 14\, 2026. All sessions will be on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm on Zoom. \nFree; registration required. \n#Salem400 \nShare this:\n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:Radical Thought and Political Resistance in the English Civil Wars
DESCRIPTION:We think of revolutionary ideas originating in 1775/1776 but more than a century before\, English political thinkers were proposing representation\, elements of democracy and an end to monarchy. Historian Rachel Foxley\, University of Reading\, explores the unexpected\, even startling\, radicalism of English civil war thinkers\, including Levellers such as pamphleteer John Lilburne. Fascinating\, little known\, and arrestingly radical\, these thinkers sound revolutionary even today. Third in Partnership of Historic Boston’s Revolution before the Revolution series. \nFounded in 1999\, Partnership of Historic Bostons offers lectures\, discussions\, walking tours\, and a fall lecture series—all by experts in the field who offer unparalleled insights into the past. All of their programs are free; they are funded through donations.

SUMMARY:Book Club: This Land is Their Land and the myth of Thanksgiving
DESCRIPTION:Join Evana Rose Tamayo  in exploring the founding myth of American history: Thanksgiving. From primary school we’re taught that Thanksgiving was a moment of harmony between Indigenous people and colonists. From David Silverman’s acclaimed This Land is Their Land we’ll discover something very different—the Thanksgiving story told from the Wampanoag point of view. “A gripping\, Native-centered narrative of the English invasion of New England\,” wrote a reviewer. Just right for the pre-Thanksgiving season! \nFounded in 1999\, Partnership of Historic Bostons offers lectures\, discussions\, walking tours\, and a fall lecture series—all by experts in the field who offer unparalleled insights into the past. SUMMARY:The Capital Crime of Witchcraft: What the Primary Sources Tell Us
DESCRIPTION:On first impression\, the witchcraft trials of the Colonial era may seem to have been nothing but a free-for-all\, fraught with hysterics. Margo Burns explores an array of prosecutions in 17th century New England\, using facsimiles of primary source manuscripts\, from first formal complaints to arrest warrants\, indictments of formal charges to death warrants\, and the reversals of attainder and rescinding of excommunications years after the fact; demonstrating how methodically and logically the Salem Court worked. This program focuses on the Salem witchcraft trials of 1692 and 1693\, when 19 people were hanged and one crushed to death\, but also examines a variety of other cases against women in New Hampshire\, Massachusetts\, and Connecticut. \nPresenter: Margo Burns is the 10th-generation great-granddaughter of Rebecca Nurse\, who was hanged in Salem in 1692 on the charge of witchcraft. She is the project manager and an associate editor of Records of the Salem Witch-Hunt\, published in 2009 by Cambridge University Press. This work is the definitive collection of transcriptions of the legal records of the episode. \nThrough its Humanities to Go bureau\, New Hampshire Humanities provides programs—such as speakers\, book discussions\, film screenings\, and living history presentations—to nonprofit organizations and community groups that are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Resisting Tyranny\, Defining Liberty
DESCRIPTION:In England\, 17th century tyranny led to bloody civil wars\, the execution of a king\, and the start of a republic. In early New England\, many of the same forces propelling violence in England led\, not to war\, but to the establishment of a polity more (quasi-)democratic and equal than any other in the English-speaking world. And the guarantee of those freedoms? In 1641 Massachusetts colonists agreed to the Body of Liberties\, a legal document which laid out an astonishing range of rights and liberties for white English colonists. \nSign up for award-winning historian Francis J. Bremer on why and how New England Puritans rejected arbitrary rule. \nFounded in 1999\, Partnership of Historic Bostons offers lectures\, discussions\, walking tours\, and a fall lecture series—all by experts in the field who offer unparalleled insights into the past.
