SUMMARY:Book Club: Whose Story? Two Views of King Philip’s War
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, mainstream understanding of King Philip’s War was based on accounts such as Mary Rowlandson’s story of her captivity and ransom. But then William Apess\, Pequot minister\, author and activist\, came along. His Eulogy on King Philip\, published in the early 19th century\, turns Rowlandson’s captivity narrative on its head. In our virtual book club\, we’ll read and discuss writings from each of them – conflicting views powerfully argued. What will you think? \nPart of the Metacom’s Resistance: Retelling King Philip’s War collection. \n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Remembering and Reconnecting: 350 Years after the Great Falls Massacre
DESCRIPTION:In this day of remembrance for the Great Falls massacre\, Nolumbeka invites you to honor this day with speakers\, music\, dancers and art. \nThe Nolumbeka Project invites you to attend a Day of Remembrance for the 300 women\, children and elders killed by colonial forces in the Great Falls Massacre\, 350 years ago on May 19\, 1676. SUMMARY:The Last Witch: Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:The Last Witch is a documentary following efforts to exonerate Elizabeth Johnson Jr.\, the last person convicted of witchcraft during the 1692 Salem Witch Trials. As a schoolteacher\, her students\, and a state senator work to clear Elizabeth’s name\, what begins as a unique school project quickly becomes an emotional journey into historical wounds left unattended—and the contemporary implications of those wounds. \nShare this:\n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Remembering Bridget
DESCRIPTION:“You can tell a lot about a community by the way they treat their dead.” On the morning of June 10th\, 1692\, one woman met the hangman’s noose. It was the point of no return in the Salem Witchcraft Hysteria. Her name was Bridget Bishop. \nPreviously accused in 1680\, she was the only victim not executed in a group. Remembering her as a fellow human being is crucial to understanding the madness that ensued. Join us in person at the Salem Witch Trials Memorial on Charter Street on June 10th at 10 am for a commemoration of the 334th anniversary of the death of the first victim of the 1692 Salem Witchcraft Hysteria. The short remembrance will honor this wronged woman – who was also a domestic abuse survivor – and acknowledge all victims and survivors of abuse\, prejudice\, and ignorance – past and present. This will include 17th-century poems\, floral tributes\, and information about Bridget’s life. \nFlowers donated by Voices Against Injustice will be available for the public to place tributes on the memorial stones of their choice. The remembrance will be live-streamed and available for replay via Instagram @creativecollectivema and @thepetticoatpages1693 \nBridget Bishop – A Remembrance of Injustice on June 10th \n \nShare this:\n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Myths and Misconceptions about the Salem Witchcraft Trials
DESCRIPTION:Bridget Bishop Anniversary Lecture at the Witch House. \nThe Salem witchcraft trials are the subject of much popular interest\, but its history is a victim of many myths\, misconceptions\, and total fiction. Historian Margo Burns will tease them apart\, from ergot to land-grabs\, and many more. \nMargo is the 10th-generation great-granddaughter of Rebecca Nurse\, who was hanged in Salem in 1692 on the charge of witchcraft. She is the project manager and an associate editor of Records of the Salem Witch-Hunt\, published in 2009 by Cambridge University Press. This work is the definitive collection of transcriptions of the legal records of the episode.
